In 1994, I selected Michelangelo’s sibyls as my research project for an art history seminar that I took at The University of New Mexico. In the seminar, every student chose a section of the Sistine Chapel to research and I chose Michelangelo’s five sibyls. That is when I began learning about sibyls and I wrote my senior thesis on the subject. Dr. Christiane Joost-Gaugier was the professor of the seminar as well as my thesis adviser. She is a world-renowned art historian and author of books and journals on Italian Renaissance art and Pythagoras. The Galleria exhibit, “Sibyls,” is dedicated to Christiane because she has been my friend, mentor and pure inspiration for over 20 years.
When I learned that sibyls were ancient fortune-tellers, it reminded me of my fascination with astrology, tarot cards, psychics and intuition. About 1980, I learned to read tarot cards from Gail Kent, a trusted friend for about 40 years. I want to acknowledge Gail for inspiring and encouraging me to pursue this project about sibyls since the 1990s. She also provided editing assistance. I also want to thank my husband and best friend, James Roberts, for editing assistance and photography.
I want to acknowledge Sven Hader for his contribution to the section on Angelica Kauffman in Part III, including Figure 99, and give thanks to: Gabrielle Angel Lilly, Anita Gonzalez, Bill Sarnoff, Cathy Polglaze, Diana Roberts, Henry Shapiro, Jill Kiefer, Jill Yeagley, Martha Hinkle, Moira Robertson and Steve Paschall for their support and inspiration.
